Django is a full-stack, batteries-included Python web framework that follows the Model-Template-View pattern. It ships its own object-relational mapper, URL routing system, template engine, form-handling and validation library, and an automatically generated admin interface — all wired together so a new project goes from django-admin startproject to a running, database-backed application in minutes rather than days.

Beyond the initial scaffold, Django’s design leans heavily on convention and reuse: reusable “apps” plug into a project via INSTALLED_APPS, schema changes are captured as auto-generated migrations, and cross-cutting concerns like authentication, sessions, CSRF protection, and internationalization are pre-wired and secure by default. Nearly two decades of production use across companies of every size have shaped it into one of the most stable and thoroughly documented frameworks in the Python ecosystem.

What You Get

  • A full ORM (django.db.models) with QuerySet-based querying, migrations, and support for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, and Oracle
  • An automatically generated, fully customizable admin interface (django.contrib.admin) for managing application data with zero custom UI code
  • A declarative URL routing system (django.urls) mapping paths to views with named URL reversal
  • A built-in template engine with template inheritance, plus optional Jinja2 integration
  • A forms library (django.forms) handling rendering, validation, and CSRF protection out of the box
  • Pre-built contrib apps for authentication, sessions, static file serving, content types, and internationalization

Common Use Cases

  • Building content-heavy sites (news, publishing, e-commerce) where the admin panel replaces a custom CMS
  • Standing up internal tools and dashboards quickly on top of an existing relational database
  • Serving as the backend/API layer for a decoupled frontend, often paired with Django REST Framework
  • Rapid MVP and prototype development where migrations and admin tooling save weeks of scaffolding work
  • Large-scale production applications that need a mature, security-audited framework with a long-term support track record

Under The Hood

Architecture Django follows a layered Model-Template-View architecture with clear separation of concerns: django/db/models implements the ORM, translating Python model classes into SQL through a lazy QuerySet abstraction; django/urls handles URL resolution; django/core/handlers (wsgi.py and asgi.py) drive the request/response cycle; django/template renders output; and django/forms manages input validation. Reusable functionality ships as “apps” registered through django/apps/registry.py, giving each installed app a self-contained configuration and lifecycle hook rather than a monolithic settings file. A middleware chain, composed in core/handlers/base.py, wraps every request. Because so many subsystems — admin, forms, serializers, migrations — introspect the Model metaclass in db/models/base.py, that abstraction is the load-bearing core: changes there ripple across nearly the entire framework.

Tech Stack Django is pure Python (3.12+) with a minimal runtime dependency footprint — asgiref for WSGI/ASGI interoperability and sqlparse for SQL formatting, plus tzdata on Windows. It ships its own ORM with backend support for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, and Oracle, its own templating engine, and its own test runner built on unittest. Packaging uses setuptools via pyproject.toml with the version read dynamically from django.__version__. Deployment targets WSGI servers like Gunicorn or ASGI servers like Daphne/Uvicorn, and CI runs an extensive GitHub Actions matrix across Python versions and database backends, including PostGIS.

Code Quality The repository’s tests/ directory contains over 200 dedicated test packages exercising the ORM, forms, template rendering, admin, migrations, and every contrib app, run through Django’s own unittest-derived test runner. Core files are consistently styled, extensively docstringed, and raise explicit, purpose-built exceptions from django.core.exceptions rather than swallowing errors. Formatting and import order are enforced via black/isort configuration in pyproject.toml, and CI workflows (linters.yml, check_pr_quality.yml, check_commit_messages.yml) gate every contribution. The codebase predates widespread Python type-hint adoption, so static typing coverage is limited compared to newer frameworks, relying instead on runtime validation.

API Design Django’s public API is built for low ceremony: django-admin startproject/startapp scaffolds a working application in seconds, the QuerySet API (Model.objects.filter(...)) reads close to natural language while lazily compiling to SQL, and the free admin interface lets teams manage data without writing any UI. Schema changes are captured automatically via makemigrations, URL patterns are declared with a small, readable DSL, and security-sensitive defaults (CSRF protection, XSS escaping, clickjacking headers) are on unless explicitly disabled. Documentation under docs/intro, docs/topics, and docs/ref is comprehensive and example-driven, keeping the path from an empty project to a working app short.
