Under The Hood
Architecture - esbuild is written in Go and organized as a pipeline of internal packages under internal/: js_lexer/js_parser/js_printer and their CSS counterparts turn source into ASTs, resolver walks the module graph, linker and bundler combine and tree-shake modules, and graph, renamer, and sourcemap handle symbol renaming and source maps. Each stage is designed to run in parallel across CPU cores. The public entry point is pkg/api (exposing Build and Transform), with cmd/esbuild wrapping it as a CLI; a long-lived binary communicates with the JavaScript host over a stdio protocol.
Tech Stack - The core is Go (75% of the codebase) with essentially no third-party dependencies beyond golang.org/x/sys, and it deliberately targets Go 1.13 for broad build compatibility. The npm package (lib/) is TypeScript that compiles to the JavaScript API and spawns or embeds the native binary; a WebAssembly build is also produced. Builds are orchestrated through a large Makefile.
Code Quality - The project is extensively tested: Go unit tests sit beside nearly every internal package (js_parser_test.go, css_parser_test.go, linker/bundler_tests, etc.), and a broad suite of JavaScript end-to-end tests (scripts/end-to-end-tests.js, js-api-tests.js, plugin-tests.js, test262.js) exercises real-world behavior and spec conformance. Code is consistently structured, with clear package boundaries and richly documented public APIs.
API Design - The surface area is small and ergonomic: a handful of CLI flags map directly to the same options in the JavaScript and Go APIs, and the TypeScript type definitions (lib/shared/types.ts) are thoroughly documented with links to the online reference. Getting started requires almost no boilerplate, and the plugin API offers a clean hook-based extension point for custom resolution and loading.
