eslint-config-airbnb-typescript
Airbnb's ESLint config extended with TypeScript support
Repository Health
Technical Analysis
eslint-config-airbnb-typescript is a shareable ESLint configuration that layers TypeScript support on top of Airbnb’s widely used JavaScript style guide. It maps Airbnb’s rules onto their typescript-eslint equivalents so that .ts and .tsx files are linted with the same conventions Airbnb applies to JavaScript, including type-aware rules that require a TypeScript project reference.
Distributed as a drop-in config, it is meant to be composed with eslint-config-airbnb (or airbnb-base) and extended in your ESLint configuration. The project reached over two million weekly downloads before being archived by its maintainer, and remains a common baseline for TypeScript linting setups.
What You Get
- Airbnb’s style rules mapped to their typescript-eslint equivalents
- Type-aware linting for .ts and .tsx files backed by a TypeScript project
- A base config for pure TypeScript plus an index config that adds React rules
- Drop-in composition with eslint-config-airbnb and airbnb-base
- A single, opinionated baseline so teams avoid hand-tuning dozens of rules
Common Use Cases
- Applying Airbnb’s style guide to a TypeScript codebase
- Standardizing linting across a team migrating from JavaScript to TypeScript
- Bootstrapping consistent lint rules in a new TypeScript or React project
- Enforcing type-aware rules that catch issues plain JavaScript configs miss
Under The Hood
Architecture - The package is a set of ESLint config objects: base.js defines the TypeScript rule mappings for general code, index.js extends it with React-specific rules, and a lib directory holds the underlying rule definitions. Each config is designed to be layered on top of Airbnb’s own configs via ESLint’s extends mechanism.
Tech Stack - Authored in JavaScript as ESLint configuration, it depends on @typescript-eslint/eslint-plugin and parser to translate Airbnb’s rules into type-aware equivalents, and it requires the consumer to point ESLint at a tsconfig for the rules that need type information.
Code Quality - The repo carries CI configuration, a changelog, Renovate for dependency updates, lint-staged and Prettier config, and contributor documentation, indicating disciplined maintenance during its active life. It has since been archived by the author, so it is now feature-frozen.
API Design - As a config package there is no runtime API; the developer experience is about composition. Setup is a matter of installing peer dependencies and adding the config to an ESLint extends array, with clear README instructions covering the required ordering relative to the Airbnb base configs.
