Next.js is the React framework maintained by Vercel for building full-stack web applications. It extends React with file-based routing, server-side rendering and static generation, streaming and React Server Components, and a Rust-powered compiler (via Turbopack and SWC) for fast local builds and production bundling.

Rather than being a library you call from your own server, Next.js owns the application’s structure: the app or pages directory defines routes, layouts, and API endpoints by convention, and the built-in CLI (next dev, next build, next start) drives the full development-to-production lifecycle. It ships zero-config defaults for image optimization, font loading, code-splitting, and caching, with an escape hatch via next.config.js for teams that need to customize the build.

What You Get

  • File-based routing across the app or pages directory, including nested layouts, route groups, parallel and intercepting routes
  • Server-side rendering, static site generation, and incremental static regeneration selectable per route
  • React Server Components and streaming SSR for shipping less client-side JavaScript
  • A Rust-based compiler (Turbopack/SWC) for fast dev-server startup and optimized production bundles
  • Built-in image, font, and script optimization components (next/image, next/font, next/script)
  • API routes and Route Handlers for building backend endpoints inside the same project
  • A CLI (next dev, next build, next start, next lint) that manages the entire dev-to-production lifecycle

Common Use Cases

  • Building marketing sites and blogs that need strong SEO via server-rendered or statically generated pages
  • Full-stack web applications that combine a React frontend with API routes/Route Handlers instead of a separate backend service
  • E-commerce and content-heavy sites that mix static generation for catalog pages with dynamic rendering for user-specific content
  • Dashboards and internal tools that need fast client-side navigation on top of an authenticated, server-rendered shell

Under The Hood

Architecture — Next.js’s core lives in packages/next/src and is organized into distinct layers: a CLI layer (bin/next.ts) that dispatches to per-command modules (cli/next-dev.ts, cli/next-build.ts, etc.); a build/compiler layer that walks the app/pages directory to generate route entrypoints and performs static analysis of each segment; a server layer (server/base-server.ts and server/next-server.ts, ~2,200 lines) that resolves routes, invokes React Server Component rendering in server/app-render, and manages streaming responses; and a client layer (client/, router.ts, link.ts) handling hydration and prefetching navigation. The performance-critical compilation work is delegated to Rust, implemented in crates/ (Turbopack, next-swc) and invoked from Node through native bindings, so the architecture is deliberately split between TypeScript for orchestration/framework logic and Rust for the hot-path bundling and transform work. Configuration flows through server/config.ts and server/config-schema.ts, which validate next.config.js against a schema before merging it with CLI flags.

Tech Stack — The repository is a pnpm-workspace monorepo (pnpm-workspace.yaml) orchestrated with Turborepo (turbo.json) and versioned with Lerna. The published next package itself depends on @next/env, @swc/helpers, postcss, and styled-jsx, with react/react-dom (18.2+ or 19.x) as peer dependencies. A parallel Rust toolchain (Cargo.toml, rust-toolchain.toml) builds the native Turbopack/SWC bindings via scripts/build-native.ts. Tests run on Jest across multiple bundler and mode combinations (webpack, rspack, Turbopack; dev/start/deploy), supplemented by Playwright for browser-driven end-to-end tests. The package requires Node.js >=20.9.

Code Quality — Testing is treated as first-class: beyond ~2,000 colocated *.test.ts files inside packages/next/src itself (e.g. config.test.ts, is-private-ip.test.ts), the repo root has separate test/unit, test/development, test/production, and test/e2e suites plus a 229-example examples/ directory that doubles as integration coverage. Error handling is centralized through a numbered error catalog (errors.json with 253 documented error pages under errors/) linked directly from thrown runtime errors, and the codebase uses consistent kebab-case file naming with domain-scoped folders (app-render/, async-storage/) and strict TypeScript throughout.

API Design — The public surface is deliberately narrow: a handful of CLI commands (next dev/build/start/lint) plus file-based conventions replace most explicit configuration. Granular, tree-shakeable sub-exports (next/link, next/image, next/navigation, next/headers, next/font, etc.) each ship matching .d.ts files for precise typing. Defaults require no configuration to get a working app running, and the extensive external documentation at nextjs.org/docs, combined with the in-repo error index, meaningfully lowers the cost of debugging unfamiliar failures.
