React Native Web
Cross-platform React UI components that render React Native's API on the web

Technical Analysis
React Native Web is a compatibility layer that implements React Native’s component and API surface (View, Text, StyleSheet, Animated, and more) on top of the DOM, so a single React codebase can target iOS, Android, and web from the same components. It underpins cross-platform frameworks like Expo’s web target and Next.js integrations that want native-and-web parity from one component tree.
Rather than being a UI kit of its own, it re-implements React Native’s primitives using CSS and DOM APIs, translating things like Flexbox layout, gesture responders, and accessibility props into their web equivalents so existing React Native screens can run largely unmodified in a browser.
What You Get
- Web implementations of core React Native components (View, Text, Image, ScrollView, TextInput, etc.) backed by DOM elements
- StyleSheet and Flexbox layout translated to CSS, including RTL support
- Animated and PanResponder APIs implemented on top of CSS transitions/transforms and pointer events
- Accessibility props (accessibilityRole, accessibilityState) mapped to appropriate ARIA attributes
- A Babel plugin for optimizing React Native Web output in production builds
- Interop with Expo’s web target and other React Native + web toolchains
Common Use Cases
- Shipping a marketing site or admin dashboard that reuses component code from an existing React Native mobile app
- Building a single Expo/React Native codebase that targets iOS, Android, and web simultaneously
- Migrating a React Native app to also support desktop browsers without duplicating UI logic
- Testing React Native component logic quickly in a browser/DOM environment during development
Under The Hood
Architecture — The repo is an npm-workspaces monorepo under packages/, with react-native-web as the core published package alongside babel-plugin-react-native-web (compile-time optimizations), dom-event-testing-library, and docs/example/benchmark packages. The core package’s src/ is organized into exports/ (one folder per public component/API — View, Text, StyleSheet, Animated, etc.) and modules/ (internal implementation helpers), with src/index.js as the single public entry point re-exporting everything under the react-native API surface. Tech Stack — Plain JavaScript with Flow type annotations (not TypeScript), built via Babel (build:commonjs/build:es dual CJS+ESM output), tested with Jest across unit:dom and unit:node configs, and using @react-native/normalize-colors, fbjs, and inline-style-prefixer as runtime dependencies for CSS compatibility. Code Quality — Each exported module has a colocated __tests__ directory (47+ test files across the package), consistent naming that mirrors upstream React Native’s own module names, and Flow types generated at build time (build:flow); however GitHub activity shows the project has slowed markedly (0 commits/month recently, last push in October 2025), so newer React Native API surface may lag behind. API Design — The library’s explicit goal is API parity with React Native itself, so existing React Native code can often import from react-native-web (or via bundler aliasing) with no changes, which is its main developer-experience win; the tradeoff is that web-idiomatic patterns (native CSS, native form elements) are traded for React Native’s abstraction, which can feel like a layer of indirection for web-only teams.
