TypeScript
A strongly typed superset of JavaScript that compiles to clean, portable JavaScript.

Technical Analysis
TypeScript is an open-source language developed by Microsoft that adds optional static typing to JavaScript. It is a strict syntactical superset of JavaScript, so every valid JS program is also valid TypeScript, but its type system lets you annotate code, catch entire classes of bugs before runtime, and unlock rich editor tooling like autocompletion and safe refactoring.
The TypeScript compiler (tsc) type-checks your code and transpiles it to standards-based JavaScript that runs in any browser, on any host, and on any OS. The same engine powers tsserver, the language service behind first-class editor support in virtually every modern IDE.
What You Get
- The
tsccommand-line compiler that type-checks and transpiles TypeScript to clean JavaScript. - A
tsconfig.json-driven configuration surface for targets, module systems, and strictness levels. - The
tsserverlanguage service that powers completions, diagnostics, and refactors in editors. - Automatic generation of
.d.tsdeclaration files for publishing typed libraries. - A programmatic Compiler API exposing the scanner, parser, checker, and emitter for tooling authors.
Common Use Cases
- Adding static type safety to new or existing JavaScript codebases.
- Building large-scale applications where refactoring safety and editor tooling matter.
- Authoring and publishing strongly-typed libraries with generated declaration files.
- Powering IDE features and custom developer tooling via the Compiler API and language service.
Under The Hood
Architecture — TypeScript is a self-hosted compiler organized as a classic multi-stage pipeline under src/compiler (43 modules): a scanner tokenizes source, the parser builds an AST, the binder constructs symbol tables and scopes, and the checker performs structural type inference and type-checking before a set of transformers lower modern syntax and the emitter produces JavaScript plus .d.ts declaration files. On top of the core compiler, src/services and src/server implement the language service and tsserver that power editor features (completions, refactors, diagnostics), while src/tsc and src/tsserver are thin CLI entry points wired to the bin/tsc and bin/tsserver binaries.
Tech Stack — The project is written almost entirely in TypeScript (99.86% of the codebase) and compiles itself. It ships with zero runtime dependencies and targets Node >=14.17. The build is driven by Hereby (Herebyfile.mjs) with roughly 42 dev dependencies for bundling, linting (a custom ESLint flat config), and formatting; the public entry point is ./lib/typescript.js (the Compiler API) with tsc/tsserver exposed as bin scripts.
Code Quality — TypeScript maintains an extensive baseline-driven test suite: tests/cases holds thousands of fixtures whose compiler output is diffed against checked-in tests/baselines, exercised through the 25-file harness in src/harness and src/testRunner. Being fully typed and self-hosting, the codebase enforces its own type discipline end to end, and the maintainers gate contributions with ESLint rules, formatting checks, and CI.
API Design — Two public surfaces coexist: the tsc CLI is near-frictionless (npm install -D typescript, then tsc), driven declaratively by tsconfig.json; and the programmatic Compiler API exposes the scanner, parser, checker, and emitter for tooling authors. The CLI and config surface are highly ergonomic and exhaustively documented on typescriptlang.org, while the low-level Compiler API is powerful but expects familiarity with compiler internals.
